The Balkans' own hidden gems: five trips under your nose

The region exports tourists to Greece and Spain while sitting on destinations the rest of the world crosses continents to see. If your budget or your annual leave will not stretch to a flight this year, these five deliver a real trip without one.

Five that never disappoint

• Ohrid, North Macedonia: a UNESCO lake town with beaches, monasteries and grilled trout. Summer swims, off-season silence.
• Kotor and Perast, Montenegro: fjord-like bay, Venetian walls, best in June or September when the cruise crowds thin.
• Mostar and the Herzegovina south, Bosnia: the bridge everyone knows plus Blagaj, Počitelj and wine country nobody does.
• Berat and Gjirokastër, Albania: Ottoman towns climbing hillsides, absurdly affordable, wonderful food.
• Uvac canyon, Serbia: the meanders and griffon vultures from the viewpoint photos, doable as a long weekend.

Why they work as trips

Costs run at domestic levels: guesthouses and apartments instead of resort hotels, meals that cost less than an airport sandwich, entrance fees in single digits. Buses connect all of them to the region's capitals, and none requires more than a few days to feel properly visited.

They also stretch the season. The coast peaks in August, but Ohrid in June, Mostar in October or Uvac in May are arguably better than in high summer, with prices to match.
