Booking accommodation without regrets: a field guide

Most accommodation disappointments are avoidable at booking time. The information is almost always in the listing; the skill is knowing what to weigh and what to ignore.

Read scores like a local

A 9.2 with 40 reviews is a weaker signal than an 8.6 with 2,000. Volume beats headline number. Below roughly 8.0 on Booking.com, read the recent reviews and look for repeated complaints; one grumpy guest is noise, five mentions of street noise are data.

Sort reviews by newest, not by most helpful. Ownership changes, renovations and decline all show up in the last three months, not in the all-time average.

Hotel or apartment?

For one or two people staying two nights, hotels usually win: no check-in choreography, breakfast solved, no cleaning fee to amortize. For families, groups, or stays past three nights, apartments pull ahead fast — the kitchen alone pays for itself, and per-person cost drops with every bed.

Total price or nothing

Compare only final checkout prices: city tax, cleaning fees and 'service' charges turn identical headline rates into very different bills. And check the cancellation terms match reality — a non-refundable rate is only cheaper if your plans are actually fixed.

This is why every stay Plavion returns carries its own direct listing link with the exact dates and party baked in: what you click is the property, the dates and the real total, verifiable in one glance at the source.
