The transfer trap: getting from the airport to the city cheaply

You hunted a bargain fare for weeks and then paid a third of it back for forty minutes in a taxi. The transfer is the most consistently underestimated cost in budget travel, and the most fixable: nearly every airport that low-cost carriers use has a public option costing a few euros.

The general rules

• Look up the transfer BEFORE you land; decision quality at 11pm with no data plan is poor.
• 'Official airport taxi' pricing is still taxi pricing. A queue does not make it cheap.
• Low-cost airports are often far from the city they claim to serve — the shuttle bus is priced into the deal, so factor its time and cost.
• Ride-hailing apps beat street taxis in most of Europe when public transport is not running.

Istanbul: both airports have cheap public buses to the center; budget real time for traffic from Sabiha Gökçen. Rome: Fiumicino has trains at several price points, Ciampino runs on shuttle buses. Barcelona: the Aerobus and metro both work; the metro needs no traffic luck. Paris: Beauvais 'Paris' airport is a 75-minute bus from the actual city — treat the shuttle as a leg of the journey. Vienna and Budapest: mainline trains and public buses reach the center for pocket change.
