Where packages genuinely win

Charter economics are real: an agency filling a whole plane weekly all summer buys seats and all-inclusive rooms at rates no individual sees. For the classic product — a family, one resort hotel, seven nights of high season, all-inclusive in Turkey or Egypt — a good package is often unbeatable, and the transfer plus a rep on site have value with small kids.

Where DIY wins

Everything that is not that product: apartments instead of resort hotels, stays shorter or longer than the charter week, two destinations in one trip, shoulder-season dates, or any trip where you would rather eat in town than at a buffet. • Price the package's exact hotel and dates on booking sites — sometimes the agency wins, sometimes the same room is cheaper direct.
• Add EVERYTHING to the DIY side: flights or fuel, transfers, meals that all-inclusive would cover.
