An Istanbul weekend from the Balkans: the budget blueprint

No destination gives Balkan travelers more per euro than Istanbul. Flights from Belgrade, Skopje, Sarajevo and Podgorica are short and frequently cheap thanks to Pegasus, Turkish Airlines, Air Serbia and Wizz Air competing on the routes. Once there, many of the city's defining experiences cost pocket change.

Getting there and in

Two airports serve the city: Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side, where low-cost carriers usually land. From both, public buses and rail links run to the center for a fraction of a taxi's price and are immune to traffic surprises. Plan the transfer before you land; it is the one place first-timers overspend.

Where the money goes furthest

Stay around Sultanahmet if you want the sights on foot, or Kadıköy on the Asian side for better food at local prices. Street food is a feature, not a compromise: simit, balık ekmek by the water, lokantas where the day's dishes sit steaming behind glass.

The Bosphorus public ferry costs about as much as a city bus and delivers the same views that cruise operators sell for twenty times more. Mosques are free to enter outside prayer times. Budget your paid tickets for one or two headliners like Topkapı or the Basilica Cistern rather than trying to see everything.

The three-day shape

  • Day 1: Sultanahmet core — Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Grand Bazaar toward sunset.
  • Day 2: ferry to Kadıköy, eat your way down the market streets, return for a Golden Horn evening.
  • Day 3: Galata and Karaköy, coffee and baklava, airport with time to spare — SAW traffic is real.
