Fly out after work on Thursday, return Sunday evening: three full days on the ground for one day of leave. Friday-Monday works too, but Sunday-evening returns are usually cheaper than Monday ones because business traffic goes the other way. Around public holidays, book the moment plans firm up; everyone in the country has the same idea.

Pick by total journey time

For four days, the destination radius is set by door-to-door time, not distance. A 2-hour direct flight with a 20-minute transfer beats a 90-minute flight into an airport an hour and a half from town. From most Balkan capitals that puts Central Europe, Italy, Greece and Turkey in the sweet spot, and makes direct flights worth a modest premium over connections.

Spend the time where it counts

• Stay central even if it costs a little more; on a 3-day trip, location is the luxury.
• Book the one must-do attraction ahead; queues are the tax on spontaneity.
